What Is the Difference Between Chiropodists and Podiatrists?
Medical terminology can be descriptive at best and downright confusing at worst. Ever wondered about the difference between a Chiropodist and a Podiatrist? You wouldn’t be alone if you have. The services offered by Chiropodists in Toronto and across Ontario are identical to those provided by Podiatrists. Training, skills, qualifications and the range of services both provide are the same. All that separates these professions is a bit of territorial nomenclature and history.
A Brief History of Chiropody and Podiatry
Here’s a little history lesson on how the world ended up with two names for the same profession and Ontario has an abundance of Chiropodists:
World War II: American “Doctors of Surgical Chiropody” began providing the majority of Foot Care services in Ontario, with limited trained Canadian and UK Chiropodists available.
1960s: The United States decided to change the name of the profession to “Podiatry”. Degrees and titles were adapted to “Doctor of Podiatric Medicine” or DPMs. Thinking that Podiatry was easier for patients and lay people to understand, Foot Care Specialists in and from the US took on this title, while Ontario many Canadian, European and Australian Chiropodists kept their old title.
Today: Little difference exists between Podiatrists and Chiropodists. Both designations require passing comprehensive Board Exams and are regulated under the College of Chiropodists of Ontario. Provincial licensing exams are also necessary to practice, and both must complete a residency in a hospital as part of their education. Chiropody is completed as a 3-year post-baccalaureate program while American Podiatrists complete a 4-year program. Only those who complete a surgical residency are eligible to perform surgeries. Some American-trained professionals also provide services in Ontario.
